Tip Of The Week

Independence Day - Make it safe for your dog

Many dogs are afraid of fireworks and other loud noises. Please do not bring your dog to fireworks displays - they will not appreciate the colors, and the noise will likely scare them or at least stress them out.

If you go to see fireworks and leave your canine friend at home, make sure he is very secure.  Dogs have been known to break through screens, fences, even glass windows when terrified and trying to escape the sound of fireworks.  The days after the Fourth of July weekend are the busiest ones of the year for most shelters - many dogs get "lost" after running in fear from fireworks.

Plan now. Make sure your dog has tags on.  Check to see that the tags are visible (sometimes the engraving gets worn off) and that your phone number is current (has your area code changed recently?). If you take your dog out of town for the weekend, get a "vacation tag".  I got one for Flip that says, "I'm staying with...." and lists his host's name and phone number.  Also, make sure you have current photo of your dog, and note any distinguishing marks (is that spot on his left hind foot or his right?).  If you need to provide a description of your lost dog for the humane society or for posters, it's helpful to have it accurate and current.

If you're home with your dog and you hear fireworks, make sure your dog feels calm and safe.  Put on music or TV to mask the noise (one student recommends watching a "war movie", since most dogs have learned to ignore the sounds from your TV and the fireworks will fit right in with the crash of the movie's bombs; another student plays mellow classical music and "reads" to her dogs instead!).  Act calm or even jolly, yawn, smile, and engage your dog in some fun activity if he or she seems alarmed. Do not inadvertently praise your dog for being scared by saying, "It’s Okay!", but show him or her that you are not bothered.

Barbeques

Remember that cooked bones are dangerous and can splinter! If you let your dog enjoy part of a summer barbeque, make sure he or she gets boneless meat or raw bones only!

Other dangers include corn cobs and wooden shish-ka-bob skewers, which can be choking hazards; and onions, alcohol, and chocolate, which can be toxic for dogs. (Please bring any excess chocolate to your favorite dog trainer for safe disposal!)

Have
a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Marshall's Story
(Marshall has been adopted!!)

February 25th, 2009

A Plea was sent out to help a German Shepherd with a gunshot wound:

Hello Everyone,

I just received a call from the Assistant Warden at the Gallia County Dog Shelter asking for help for this guy (no picture).  He is a GSD mix, approx. 40-50 lbs, and very friendly.  Due to the injury on his right foot (looks like a bullet grazed it, but he can still put weight down on it) the wardens were going to put him down.  Upon taking him to the "put down" room this morning, neither one of them could go through with it.  Instead, they have decided to make a plea for help.  They both have seen potential in this dog and want very much to get him out of there.  There is a witness that has stated they saw the guy that took a shot at the dog.  All the dog was doing was playing with this guys dog.  I guess that behavior warranted a shot.  HMMM?!  Anyway, it seems the supposed owners of the dog are for some reason not coming forth to re-claim him.  He was wearing a collar, but no i.d. tag or county license.  The wardens have had him out in a group run, and he has done wonderfully with getting along with others.  No signs of aggression, and has a great temperament.  Can anyone help?  The wardens said they would be willing to wait a few days in order to get help for him, but not much past that.

Marshall is pulled and transported to 4 Paws Sake and taken to Sylvania Veterinary Hospital.  Thank you to Gallia County Animal Shelter for sparing his life,  Last Hope for pulling him, Kathy & Sandy for setting up transport and Amy, Vikki, Chris & Pat for transporting him safely.

"Thanks for the ride Chis!"                     "Hi Pat - Nice to meet you!  I'm Marshall"

"Thank you everyone for helping me!"

March 2, 2009

Sylvania vet called, Marshall has an infection in two of his top back teeth, you can see up into his sinus cavity.   They are doing X-Ray's on his leg to see if there is any damage done, very swollen.  There is a wound on his neck, not sure what that is yet.  He is also Heart Worm positive.  We are waiting to hear back how positive he is.  It will be risky to put him under, but if they can they would like to treat the infection in his mouth, if they are able to put him under to do that they will also go head and neuter at the same time.

This poor sweet guy has a long road ahead of him, but he is in the best of care.

Marshall's was able to be put under anesthetic, he was neutered, the infection in his mouth was taken care of and he was neutered.  He also received his first heartworm treatment.

March 3, 2009

Marshall has been taken to foster care where he will get the love and rest he needs.  His wounds will be cleaned daily.   He will be going for his 2nd heartworm treatment in 4 weeks.

From Marshall's foster mom:

I am so sorry it took so long! Marshall (Sam) is doing great. He is very well behaved with my other dogs and is good with the cats as well! He is on the rigid schedule of meds at 6 a.m., whirlpool at 5 pm, meds at 6 pm, whirlpool at 10 pm, and more meds at midnight! HE is high maintenance but so worth it!. I have to feed him 3 times a day because his mouth hurts so much when he eats...aww. HE stays in the crate when I am at work but does not seem to mind! HE sleeps on the floor of my bedroom at night and doesn't make a sound!. He is working on manners (counter surfing, helping him self to any food available, peeing on corners in the house) and is responding well to all animal and human contact. HE IS A HUGE LUV BUG AND WANTS TO HELP WITH EVERYTHING! He likes to nibble on people and give them love. He is still limping due to his L front paw but does not wine or yelp at all! He really is a great dog and will NOT be difficult to find a wonderful home! If you need more info please email me with specifics. Also i am trying to take good pics of him but he wont stay still! So i should have some of those coming soon!

March 8, 2009

Here is the new update. Over the weekend we had a few developments with Marshall. He now has the a lot of green/brown drainage out of his Left nostril. He also has a little bit of green drainage out of the place where his teeth were extracted. He is really a trooper when I have to clean out his nose and mouth... several times an hour! I attempted to give him a bath today (Sunday) however, he got really worked up and i was worried he would be too excited! So i used a wet rag to clean off as much of him as i could. His front L leg (the gunshot would leg) is doing great and has almost no drainage during the massage's! It is still a challenge to put weight on him as him mouth is too painful to eat too much at a time. He is limping a lot less and has found one toy that he has claimed as his toy. Attached is a pic of his new buddy and a close up shot of him!

March 15, 2009

Well Marshall is starting to feel much better with the two different antibiotics twice a day. He starts a new round of regular wormer for his hookworm on Monday. He is starting to play and hop around with the other dogs... which is a double edged sword. I love that he is feeling better, however, with the heartworm he has to remain calm! We need to work on manners as I went outside and when I looked in the window he was standing (all 4 paws) on the counter looking out the window to find me! SO needless to say we have a few things to work on now that he is feeling better! He is also starting to put weight on and eat dry food! Here are some new pics of the goofball!

March 22, 2009

Here is the latest update on Marshall. He is now very playful and has taken a huge liking to my small dog, Max. He likes to romp around with my larger dog, Jack, however is very protective of Max! Marshall is not up to a healthy weight (least he looks like it to me). He no longer tolerates being in his crate and has successfully bent 2 of my metal crates when left in them! He is very good about not chewing on things and is potty trained!

March 29, 2009Well Marshall has had one exciting week. He is now only on 2 different antibiotics 2 times a day, so his meds have decreased significantly. He is also very playful and romping around the yard with the other dogs. I had a friend come over and bring his 2.5 year old son to meet Marshall. They loved each other! He is so so so so good around young children! He also has taken a liking to all squeaky toys and plush toys (to defluff of course).

April 1, 2009

Marshall went to the vet this morning for his 2nd and 3rd heartworm treatment. He will be coming home tomorrow.

April 5, 2009

Well Marshall has had yet another difficult week. We were just finishing up one of his antibiotics when he returned to the vet for his 2nd and 3rd heartworm treatments. The vet noticed the green goo coming from his left nostril (still) and gave us yet another medication to take every 12 hours. SO he is still on two different medications (and does not fall for my tricks of putting the pills in food, etc.) and does not appreciate taking them! His heartworm treatment had me worried about him. I brought him home from the vet, he went out side to potty and then passed out on my bed for the remainder of the night! He is still so sore he cannot go up stairs comfortably, play with the other dogs, lay down comfortably, or even lift his tail to wag it! His back is so painful! I felt so bad i got the heating pad out for him! Here are some pics of him!

April 13, 2009

HI! Here is an update on Marshall...I has now learned that if I SIT nice when asked.. I get a TREAT!! YUMMY!! I have also learned a few other things, such as, if I dig a hole big enough I can fit under the fence. This does not make mom very happy at all. She spent the whole weekend putting up wooden things over all the nice holes I dug (whats her problem?) Anyway, since I am stuck here in this very nice comfy home and am feeling much better I think ill play with my buddies Jack and Max! I love to steal the toys and then play tug of war with them!! Oh and the best game to play is "who can get closer to mom"! I have to go everywhere she goes because she is always doing something I can help with. OH and we had a friend over who was very short (my height) and we both loved to play with the same kind of toys (I had to share my barney toy with him) and he loved to scream and get kisses from me! Little people are fun to play with! Mom took a few pics of me over the weekend but I was not feeling like a good smile so i stuck my tounge out at her! Toodles for now!

May1, 2009

Well marshall/sam has had yet another painful event with a huge splinter in his front L paw. He limped on that leg for a week until the entire splinter came out! The splinter itself ended up being about an inch long and pretty thick! Lord knows where he found that.... Well after the leg began to feel better we went to the Bow Wow Walk at Oak Openings for a 2 mile walk. Marshall did wonderful with all of the other people and dogs that showed up! He had a great time drinking from the stream and walking with Jack and Max. After the walk we returned home where he took a 4 hour nap! Guess he was a smidge overexcited!

Marshall is now available for adoption please click here to give Marshall his forever home
